The solid legs of the Atlas table, named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold the sky on his shoulders, stand strong as support for the spacious tabletop. The meeting and contrast between the legs and the tabletop are fundamental to the design, where each element exaggerates the other, giving the table its distinctive presence and brutalist air. For Atlas, John Astbury has drawn inspiration from various influences in the history of architecture. There are references to porticoes and colonnades, but Atlas is primarily based on the archetypal post-and-lintel construction. Combined with simple geometry, the circle and the square, these primary archetypes together create the character and composition of the table.
