A giant in the world of Italian mid-century design, Pietro Fornasetti saw every object as as canvas. Inspired by both classic Italian art and the burgeoning Surrealist movement, the visionary artist and designer created a prolific collection of imaginative, otherworldly illustrations throughout his lifetime, which he used to decorate his never-ending line of furniture and home accessories — art for everyday use, as he called it. Our Fornasetti Nel Mentre Mascherina Candle is housed in a handmade porcelain jar adorned with the face of Fornasetti’s muse, the Edwardian-era opera singer Lina Cavalieri. Fornasetti created hundreds of illustrations of the soprano throughout his career, two of which are found here — Lina’s captivating face covered with a mesh veil in hand-applied gold leaf on one side, and a mysterious Lina with a single finger pressed to her lips to convey silenzio on the other. It’s topped with a shallow, tray-like lid, emblazoned with a sinuous serpent holding a golden apple in its mouth — another theme that Fornasetti continually revisited in his work.
