2. Myojo: protection against evil, purification, protection.

Made from cypress wood used for the Danjo Garan Chumon gate, which was rebuilt to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Koyasan.

The Danjo Garan Chumon is a five-room, two-storey gate said to have been first constructed by Ambassador Kobo at the time of the founding of Koyasan.

Trees used for temple construction are carefully protected and nurtured as ‘sacred trees’ on the Koyasan site.

Only sacred trees that are 300 years old are cut down and used to rebuild the temple.
