Beneath it, everted flanges curl outward like the ends of an ancient scroll, framing a single broad drawer whose face is guarded by a large, petal-edged brass plate, its once-bright surface now the color of storm clouds and old bronze. Two teardrop pulls hang motionless, as though waiting for fingers that will never return. The legs rise straight and spare, tapering to delicate horse-hoof feet that barely disturb the floor, while the recessed waist and modest cloud-scroll spandrels lend the piece an air of restrained dignity. In every scratch and shadow it holds the hush of ancestral halls, the faint scent of camphor wood, and the low light of oil lamps long extinguished.
