Unusual silver cuff bangle dating from the latter half of the 19th century. It\'s more streamlined - less wide and bulky - than most period examples, and features fantastically intricate hand-engravings inside the seven oval panels that decorate the front - ferns and possibly pimpernels, acanthus and chain-links. The name Mildred is engraved onto the back along with a date: 2.2.46. We think it was likely given as a \'coming of age\' gift to Mildred on her 21st (or maybe 17th/18th) birthday. The Victorians loved their symbolism. By the time this bangle was made, floriography (aka the Language of Flowers) was a highly refined form of symbolic communication; each flower or plant had a precise and specific meaning, and together they were used to communicate without words. Let\'s take a look at the examples engraved here: Fern - fascination, sincerity, magicPimpernel - changeAcanthus - art and artifice, enduring life, immortalityChain (obvs not a flower) - connections, strength, unityAll together they present a powerful, heady cocktail for a young woman to enter adult life.
