HOT ! Vintage Persian Hamadan Rug

This rug comes from the Caucasus, the mountainous region stretching between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, encompassing what is today Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. The Caucasus has one of the oldest and most distinctive rug weaving traditions in the world, producing rugs that are immediately recognisable for their bold geometry, strong structure and confident use of pattern.

Caucasian rugs are woven by tribal and village weavers working from memory and personal interpretation. The designs are angular and geometric by nature, the loom and the weaving technique favour straight lines and sharp angles. Medallions, hooked border motifs, stylised animals, tribal symbols and repeating geometric fields are the vocabulary of this tradition. The borders are strong and structured, often carrying as much visual weight as the field itself.

Hand-knotted from wool on a wool or cotton foundation. As a vintage piece, the colours have already mellowed and the pile has settled into a character that only time and natural dyes together produce.
